42 Lessons I Learned Over 42 Years

It’s hard to believe, but tomorrow I turn 42. I don’t always feel it—until I move and the aches and pains remind me I’m getting older. Then there’s the reality that my kids will be 19 and 21 this year, which makes it official. All in all, life has treated me well. That doesn’t mean I haven’t faced heartache and pain, but I choose to focus on the good. One of the best parts of getting older is not taking myself as seriously and feeling more comfortable in my own skin. Here are the top 42 lessons I’ve learned over 42 years:

  1. Good things do come to an end.
  2. Bad days are only as bad as you let them be—keep a glass-half-full outlook.
  3. Happiness comes from within, not from someone else.
  4. Who you are matters far more than what you own; possessions are just things.
  5. Taking the high road is difficult, but the view afterward makes it worthwhile.
  6. Exercise isn’t just about burning calories; it’s a mental reboot and a chance for fresh air.
  7. Many things are better left unsaid.
  8. Having older kids can feel bittersweet, but the free time can be liberating.
  9. Divorce can be an ending and a new beginning.
  10. Being betrayed reflects on the betrayer, not on you.
  11. Honesty is one of the finest qualities anyone can have.
  12. Life goes on whether you’re a size 6 or 16—live it fully.
  13. Doing what you love for work is wonderful, but it’s still work.
  14. Friendships change for reasons only time or fate understands.
  15. Forgiving someone is for your peace, not necessarily for theirs.
  16. Saying “I love you” matters less than making someone feel loved.
  17. Sometimes a cookie can make everything feel better—at least for a few minutes.
  18. Having great parents is a genuine gift.
  19. Fifteen minutes of quiet time and a devotion in the morning can improve the whole day.
  20. Inspiration can come from the most unexpected places.
  21. Being a mother is my greatest joy and my deepest worry.
  22. Family isn’t only about blood; people who love and support you are family too.
  23. A good vacation is worth the expense for the memories and reset.
  24. Paying cash feels different and more mindful than swiping a card.
  25. Technology can be both a lifeline and a time-sucker.
  26. The most valuable lessons often come from the hardest moments.
  27. Seasons of life change, but core values should remain steady.
  28. A good cry can be the best medicine sometimes.
  29. Forcing things rarely works; it only makes them feel forced.
  30. Investing in yourself is never a waste of time.
  31. Life-altering and tragic events can happen to anyone, even the best people.
  32. Sometimes a girls’ night is exactly what you need.
  33. You get out of a marriage what you put into it.
  34. When opportunities come, take them and run with them.
  35. Never ask for patience unless you mean to use it—God will give you chances to practice.
  36. Bras and shoes can be overrated.
  37. Saying thank you is always noticed and appreciated.
  38. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion—let them have it.
  39. The gift of time is often more valuable than money.
  40. Moms should trust their instincts.
  41. Things are not always what they seem.
  42. Everyone deserves a second chance, but a third may not always be wise.

Off we go into the weekend. Even though I’ve come down with a cold (womp womp), I’m looking forward to time with family. I also look forward to year 43 and plan to savor every moment. Happy birthday to me!
