Hi everyone! I was feeling especially lovey lately, so instead of buying a ready-made treat I decided to make homemade chocolate-covered strawberries for my boyfriend. It’s a simple way to get creative and show a little extra love with something handmade.

Ingredients for dipped strawberries

The basic ingredients you need are simple:

  • strawberries
  • semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • white chocolate chips
  • coconut oil

If you want to add flavor, texture or color, consider:

  • toasted shredded coconut
  • chocolate shavings or curls
  • sprinkles (this is what I used)
  • chopped nuts
  • graham cracker crumbs

Tools needed

These simple tools make the process easier:

  • paper towels or a clean dry cloth
  • baking sheet (for moving berries around)
  • parchment paper or a silicone mat
  • 2 small bowls
  • measuring spoons

What kind of chocolate to use?

Use high-quality chocolate or chocolate chips when possible. Chocolate is the star of this recipe, and better chocolate will give you a smoother, more satisfying finish.

How to melt the chocolate

There are two reliable methods: microwave or double boiler.

Microwave

Microwaving is quick and convenient. Heat the chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval, until smooth. This prevents overheating and keeps the chocolate glossy.

Double boiler (stove)

For gentle, controlled melting, use a heat-safe bowl over a pot of simmering water. Stir frequently until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.

Can you make them ahead of time?

Yes. Chocolate-covered strawberries keep best when made the same day or up to one day ahead. Strawberries can become overly ripe and release moisture if stored too long, which affects texture and appearance.

Tips for perfect chocolate-dipped strawberries

  • Dry strawberries completely. Any water will cause the chocolate to seize. After washing, pat each berry dry, including the leaves.
  • Keep the green leaves on. They act as a natural handle for dipping and make the berries easier to hold while coating.
  • Work in batches. Dip a few strawberries at a time so the chocolate stays at the right consistency and you can decorate them before the chocolate sets.

How to store

Place the finished strawberries on a lined baking sheet, wrap loosely with plastic wrap and refrigerate. For best texture and appearance, enjoy within 24 hours.

Can they be frozen?

Freezing is not recommended. When frozen strawberries thaw they release moisture and become mushy, which makes the chocolate soggy and affects flavor and appearance.

Ingredients

  • 5 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 3 oz white chocolate chips
  • 4 tsp coconut oil (total)
  • 1 lbs strawberries (about 20), rinsed and dried

Instructions

  • Wash and dry the strawberries thoroughly. Any moisture will cause the chocolate to seize. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat and place the berries on it.
  • Place semi-sweet chocolate in one small bowl and white chocolate in another. Add 3 tsp coconut oil to the semi-sweet and 1 tsp to the white chocolate.
  • Microwave each bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring between intervals, until smooth. This should take about 2 minutes total depending on your microwave.
  • Dip each strawberry into the melted chocolate, coating about three-quarters of the berry. Gently shake off excess chocolate.
  • Return the dipped strawberries to the prepared baking sheet and add sprinkles or other decorations while the chocolate is still wet.
  • Do not move the berries once placed on the sheet; allow the chocolate to set for a flawless finish.
  • Chill the baking sheet in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to fully harden the chocolate. Serve or package as a gift.
