Back to School Season

Late August brings the familiar buzz of back-to-school season. With Claire starting kindergarten and Charlie entering fifth grade this fall, I wanted to put together a cheerful celebration to mark these milestones. We love making a little tradition out of it each year. Time really flies—Charlie was only six months old when I began this blog—so a celebration feels extra meaningful.

To kick off our celebration we created a “One Smart Cookie” themed party at home for the kids, complete with pencil-inspired cupcakes and apple-shaped pretzel treats. Simple touches and a few homemade accents made the party feel personal and festive.

Back to School Backdrop

The backdrop sets the tone, so we started there. A notebook-paper theme is easy to pull off and looks great in photos. Using a clean white wall as the base, we added blue and pink streamers to mimic the lines and margin of notebook paper. The result is bright, playful, and very inexpensive to create at home.

For a tidy look, measure and space the blue streamers evenly, then place a single pink streamer along the left edge to recreate the margin. This small planning step makes a big visual difference.

Easy School-Themed Party

With the backdrop in place, we added a playful message above the dessert table. Silver mylar letter balloons spelled “One Smart,” and we used a cookie-shaped balloon below to complete the phrase. When the exact cookie balloon wasn’t available, we painted a plain mylar balloon to look like a cookie—an easy DIY solution that added personality.

Pro tip: If you can’t find the exact balloon you want, customize a plain mylar balloon with paint or markers to match your theme. It’s quick and gives a polished, handmade touch.

Back to School Desserts

For the centerpiece dessert we made a simple cookie cake using store-bought cookie dough baked in an ungreased cake pan until set. After it cooled, tube frosting created a friendly face and glasses, and pink candy melts added rosy cheeks. It’s an easy, crowd-pleasing treat that the kids loved.

Easy Pencil Cupcakes

Pencil cupcakes were a fun addition to the table. We used ice cream cones for the base, filled them with cake mix, topped with store-bought frosting, and finished with a Hershey’s Kiss and colored scrapbooking paper to mimic a #2 pencil. These are simple to assemble and look adorable grouped together on a platter.

Cute Apple Pretzels

My favorite bite-sized treat was the apple pretzels. Pretzels dipped in red candy melts become little apples when you add a tiny fondant leaf and stem. They’re quick to make, irresistibly cute, and perfect as a themed snack or teacher gift.

Pro tip: Prepare desserts the day before the party when possible. Taking a semi-homemade approach—using a mix of store-bought components and simple homemade finishing touches—keeps the party stress-free while still feeling special.

Celebrating the New School Year

How will you celebrate the start of the school year? We like to make a month of it with small moments and a few themed treats. Simple printables or a few decorative touches can turn an ordinary room into a festive backdrop for first-day photos and memories.

Remember, a back-to-school celebration doesn’t need to be elaborate—what matters most is celebrating the milestone with heart. A few thoughtful decorations, easy desserts, and a bit of planning will create a day your kids will enjoy and remember. Happy back to school!
